Nine Silly Questions: Phil Corless

He's a "stay-at-home dad who writes about parenting, homeschooling, and life in North Idaho" according to the description of his massively popular blog A Family Runs Through It. Plus, he's an amazing photographer, a huge fan of the band XTC and the classic sitcom Seinfeld, and he really ought to make it out on the town sometime (1988? Um...that's 20 years!). He's Phil Corless and he's this week's victim on the Get Out grill.

1. Which North Idaho establishment serves to most delicious burgers and what makes them so great?

This is a tough one, since I cut way back on burgers some years ago. I think I've eaten a total of three burgers in the past three years. If I had to pick the most delicious, it was my most recent experience at Red Robin, where I enjoyed a delectable Banzai Burger, with pineapple slice and teriyaki sauce.

2. What's your favorite local place to go out on the town for a few drinks, maybe some live music or dancing and what do you like about it?

Here's where I reveal my true boring self. I haven't been out on the town for drinks since a night at Moscow's downtown Garden Lounge back in 1988. I hear it's still a cool place for the older college crowd down there. If I was to go out NOW, it might be to Capone's because of the laid-back atmosphere.

3. Who serves the best breakfast in North Idaho and what are you most likely to order when you go there?

Last big breakfast I had was at Old European Breakfast House in Post Falls. I always order Eggs Benedict when I'm eating out in the morning, which isn't that often actually. My usual breakfast at home is a small bowl of Cascadian Farms Oats & Honey Granola. Best cereal ever.
4. What is your favorite type of Asian cuisine and which area restaurant serves it up the best and why do you think so? What do you like to order?

I like Chinese the best, but Thai and Japanese are right there as favorites. The dish I always order for myself is Kung Pao Chicken. I get it all to myself because nobody else in my family likes the spicy stuff. I can't say there are any Coeur d'Alene area Chinese restaurants that serve up a perfect plate of Kung Pao Chicken. Surprisingly, Panda Express does it as well as any. My son is addicted to their Orange Chicken. I like that we can get a family-size feast for $25. For all-around Chinese food goodness, we'll drive all the way down to Moscow to the Old Peking on Main Street.

5. Which area Mexican restaurant is the best and why do you think so? What do you like to order?

Chulo Cafe, on Neider Ave., is my favorite, by far. It's quick, it's fresh, it's inexpensive. We've eaten there dozens of times, and I always order the same exact thing -- Sweet Pork Burrito, served Chulo Style, with salad instead of chips.

6. What's your favorite North Idaho activity that requires little or no money but provides a whole day of fun and entertainment?
My perfect North Idaho summer day is one spent on the NIC Beach with my kids. We bring a small cooler, a couple of beach chairs, and an umbrella. Once I get into the water, I could just stay in there all day. And I usually do. A day like that reminds me how simple life should be.

7. Where was the worst dining experience you¢ve had at a local restaurant/lounge and what was so rotten about it?

First I'll say that in five years in Coeur d'Alene, I've never had a really horrible dining experience. But not long ago we ate at the new Azteca in Riverstone and found it to be surprisingly mediocre. I knew right away something was amiss when they had our food out to us three minutes after ordering. I never expected Azteca to be a fast food or cafeteria experience, but that's exactly what the food tasted like. Horribly bland and tasteless. I've had better meals at Del Taco, and that's not saying much. There are way too many Mexican restaurants around here for a bad one to thrive. But because of it's location and people's willingness to settle for average food, I'm afraid Azteca will be successful. I won't go back, though.
8. Someone offers to but you a drink. What do you order and why?

I'm not a drinker, so it would be something non-alcoholic. Most probably huckleberry lemonade. You just can't go wrong adding huckleberry to anything.

9. What place, restaurant or otherwise, do you take out-of-town visitors to leave them with a good impression of North Idaho?

Most of our out-of-town visitors want to head downtown, and we've always had good luck eating at Cricket's. It's a fun atmosphere with unique dishes, and the location is perfect for walking off the meal on Sherman Avenue, around the resort boardwalk, and even up Tubbs Hill if we're not too full. Coeur d'Alene's downtown and waterfront never fails to impress our friends and family.

Nine Silly Questions: Jenny McLeod

Jenny McLeod is my most fab cubicle neighbor ever but she flat-out refused to let me take her pic for this post. So, since she's really digs turtles for some reason, and has them coming out the wazoo (erm, at least her desk does), here's a nice turtle photo instead.

1. Which North Idaho establishment serves to most delicious burgers and what makes them so great?

Thad's at the Flying J near Stateline. Nice and greasy. Super good if you're hung over.

2. What’s your favorite local place to go out on the town for a few drinks, maybe some live music or dancing and what do you like about it?

I like Chillers. Cheap beer, cheap booze and let's not forget about the cheap women! The bands aren't always good, but you're drunk, so who cares?

3. Who serves the best breakfast in North Idaho and what are you most likely to order when you go there?

Rustler's Roost, of course. I love their fried potatoes.

4. What is your favorite type of Asian cuisine and which area restaurant serves it up the best and why do you think so? What do you like to order?

We won't go to anywhere in town. My favorite Chinese Place is Peking North in Spokane. I always order the combo plate thet has EVERYTHING on it.

5. Which area Mexican restaurant is the best and why do you think so? What do you like to order?

Toro Viejo in downtown Cd'A. I love their nachos and their huge glasses of beer.

6. What’s your favorite North Idaho activity that requires little or no money but provides a whole day of fun and entertainment?

Going for a nice drive up the Coeur d'Alene River.

7. Where was the worst dining experience you’ve had at a local restaurant/lounge and what was so rotten about it?

Tomato Street was terrible. We found hair in our food and the service was terrible.

8. Someone offers to but you a drink. What do you order and why?

A shot of tequila and a beer chaser cuz that's just how I roll!

9. What place, restaurant or otherwise, do you take out-of-town visitors to leave them with a good impression of North Idaho?

Tony's or Wolf Lodge for lake and steak .

Nine Silly Questions: Dave Oliveria

Dave Oliveria is the ringmaster extraordinaire over at the local internet circus Huckleberries Online. We happen to share opinion space in the Spokesman-Review's Handle Extra section on Saturdays, now available free at a news stand near you. This week, he has also agreed to be the willing victim of our nine silly questions:

1. Favorite Mexican Restaurant in North Idaho and what’s so cool about it?

Toro Viejo in downtown Coeur d'Alene. I always order the steak fajitas because I know the meal is going to be good and filling -- the best dish of its kind in town. The decor is OK. Adding more to the Mexican flavor of the place is the fact that the servers often can't speak English. It provides me with an opportunity to practice my Spanish. I've dined at Azteca in Riverstone the last two times I've gone out for Mexican food because family visitors wanted to go there. The meals were over-priced and so-so. My favorite Mexican fast food is the grilled stuft burrito at Taco Bell.

2. Favorite Asian Restaurant in North Idaho and what’s so cool about it?

Canton Restaurant of yesteryear. Nothing particular now. My son selected a family dinner at Canton to announce to my wife and me that he was in love with a young lady he eventually married. So it's a special place. I've been meaning to try Chinese Gardens again (as a result of the recent OrangeTV review). I'm not impressed with Oriental food in North Idaho.

3. North Idaho food place you’d suggest avoiding if possible and why?

I was unpleasantly surprised by the cost and mediocre quality of a hamburger at Hot Rod Cafe during a recent business. The feel of the place is top-notch. But I couldn't believe I paid $10 for a burnt burger with a side order of fries (that I ate with chop sticks to impress my brothers and brother-in-law). A sassy waitress who wouldn't put up with my brother's light-hearted guff was the only thing worth mentioning later.
4. Local place you’d be most likely to take out of town visitors and why?

We usually go downtown for coffee at Java On Fourth, a bite in one of the Sherman Avenue eateries and then a walk around on the boardwalk and along City Beach. However, I've been adding a stop at Riverstone to view all the construction, the manmade lake and The Feathers public art nearby.

5. Favorite local town for a day trip and why?

Sandpoint. Hands down. I thoroughly enjoy the quirky artsy-fartsy nature of the downtown area and a trip to Foster's Crossing for a bowl of soup and a sandwich -- and to check out the used books.

6. Most Beloved Breakfast Joint? What do you usually order?

Rustler's Roost. I enjoy the cowboy feel to Woody McEvers' place -- and shooting the breeze with Woody if he's around. I keep things pretty simple because I don't usually eat breakfast ... mebbe 2 eggs over easy with hash browns, ham and the side order of muffins and gravy. The skillet offerings at the local Denny's aren't bad either for a faster food place.

7. Favorite North Idaho bar/club/night spot and why?

I rarely, if ever, go to a bar/club/night spot; so, I'd have to say Capone's simply because the pub and its employees have performed superbly in hosting the last two HBO Blogfests.

8. Someone offers to buy you a drink. What do you order?

I was last offered a drink at Blogfest '07, and I turned it down in favor of a lemonade. I rarely have any alcohol to drink in public although I drink a half glass of wine each evening before bed. If push came to shove, I'd order a glass of Merlot or white Zinfandel. Never a hard drink.

9. Most frequented North Idaho Coffee Shop/Espresso Stand?

Java on Fourth (although I've been there only once since the new owner took over). I prefer to wi-fi there. Usually, I go to Starbucks near Coeur d'Alene's Albertson's if I'm meeting someone for a conversation because we can hide out in the corners and talk relatively privately.

Nine Silly Questions: Kim Blaylock

Watch this spot on Mondays for a new Get Out "Man on the Street" series in which I accost random innocent people and finagle them into answering nine silly questions about their dining and drinking habits.

Kicking things off is local Service Advisor Kim Blaylock, a tiny, fierce woman who knows how to live it up and suffer next-day repercussions with a smile.

1. Favorite Mexican Restaurant in North Idaho and why you think it’s so cool?

I love Toro Viejo in Post Falls on Pleasant View Road. The manager, Rafael, has been there many years and is always happy to see me. It’s just a fun and good experience.

2. Favorite Asian Restaurant in North Idaho and why you think it’s so cool?

For Chinese, I like the one next to Rob’s Seafood in Post Falls (Golden Dragon). Overall though, it’s Takara, even if I’m not in the mood for sushi. The New York Dinner is sublime too!

3. North Idaho food place you’d suggest avoiding if possible?
Jackpot truck stop. You’d think the food would be fresh – it’s not. Also, it’s pretty dirty.

4. Best local place to relax with a cocktail?
El Patio Bar & Grill – I love this bar. Very friendly, relaxing, and good people.

5. Favorite Grocery or C-Store deli?
Gittels Grocery on Government Way. Clean, convenient and 3 hot dogs for $1.19!

6. Most Beloved Breakfast Joint? What do you usually order?
Old European in the Spokane Valley (note: I think there’s also a location in Post Falls.) I love the Eggs Benedict and fresh Orange Juice.

7. Favorite Fast Food haunt? Micky D’s. Great grease to sop up last night’s cocktails…

8. Someone offers to buy you a drink. What do you order?
Bull Blaster (Red Bull & Jagermeister.) Blast me baby!

9. Most frequented Coffee Stop/Espresso Stand?
Castle Coffee. It’s close to work, it's run by a nice gal, and is a bit more economical.
